What to Expect During Your First Pilates Class

I think we all experience a sense of excitement and curiosity and maybe even a slight bit of anxiety when starting a new routine especially when we’re going to a new place like a gym or Pilates studio. We go to their website click on the about us page or check out class information, browse through pictures on social media and see if we can gain insight into who we will be meeting and what the environment or “vibe” is like. We want to assure you, that The Pilates Effect is a place that will make you feel welcome, inspired, comfortable and confident.

If this is your first time taking a Pilates class, you may have more questions about specifics. We took the liberty of outlining some of the basic and frequently asked questions here in this blog to help you feel more comfortable as you embark on this amazing and transformational journey.

Frequently Asked Questions - New Pilates Members

1. What do I need to do to prepare for Pilates?

There’s really no preparation necessary just bring a positive attitude and desire to get healthy! Since Pilates is a low-impact exercise, there’s no need to prepare your body for class. Our experienced and compassionate instructors will help guide you with goals and routines based on your specific needs.

Pilates is for all fitness levels, all body shapes and sizes. Even if you have an injury, our instructors have extensive knowledge and can help you get back the quality of life you deserve. If you need a more relaxed, laid-back approach, that’s fine with us. If you want to go all-in and take it to your limit, we can handle that too! Or maybe you’re in between, that’s great also. Our goal is to help you get comfortable knowing your body and how to achieve optimal health.

2. What should I wear?

Definitely wear fitted clothing. Such as a fitted tank, longline sports bra (low impact sports bras are suitable for Pilates because there is no cardio involved) paired with tights, leggings (long or short), or fitted joggers.

Fitted clothing is recommended for 2 main reasons:

1. We do a lot of stretching and you want to stay covered.

2. Your instructor can see your body in correct alignment.

3. How many people are in a class?

Our clients LOVE our class sizes!

The Pilates Effect classes are smaller and more individualized.

Very personal and up-close guided instruction that makes you feel more like you’re in a private session than a group setting.
